In brief

Which method is best for printing bags?

For crisp logos in larger runs, screen printing is the economical choice. Photorealistic designs on laminated PP woven and RPET bags are produced by gravure printing on an OPP film, which is reverse-printed and then laminated on. DTF or transfer printing handles multicolour designs in small runs, polyester is printed edge to edge by sublimation – and for premium logos on cotton, jute or felt, embroidery is the natural choice.

As versatile as your requirements

Screen printing

The classic for crisp one-colour or multicolour logos – with high opacity and excellent durability.

Details

In screen printing, ink is pressed through a fine-mesh screen directly onto the bag – with a separate screen for each colour. The result is strong, opaque solid colours (e.g. Pantone-matched) with excellent wash and abrasion resistance. On our carousel printing presses, we print fully sewn bags efficiently in series.

Gravure printing (rotogravure)

Photorealistic designs on laminated bags: an OPP film is reverse-printed and then laminated onto the fabric.

Details

For laminated PP woven and RPET bags, gravure printing is the premium method: rather than the fabric itself, an ultra-thin OPP film is reverse-printed and only bonded to the fabric during lamination. The design sits protected beneath the film – scuff-resistant and brilliant. A separate copper cylinder is engraved for each ink colour, which pays off for large runs of approx. 1,000–3,000 units and upwards.

Full-surface digital/photo printing

Large-format digital printing for photorealistic all-over designs – the bag itself becomes the advertising space.

Details

Modern large-format digital printers produce photorealistic, full-coverage designs with fine gradients – without printing plates. Ideal for retail campaigns, product worlds and designs where the entire bag becomes advertising space, such as the CityShopper.

Materials: RPET (laminated), PP woven, polyester

DTF printing (direct to film)

Multicolour, highly detailed designs via a transfer film – cost-effective even for small runs.

Details

In DTF printing, the design is first printed onto a special film and then transferred to the bag using heat and pressure. Once the film is peeled off, a vibrant, highly detailed print with clean edges remains – on almost any textile and colour.

Heat transfer printing

Designs are printed onto a carrier material and transferred with precise placement using a transfer press.

Details

In heat transfer printing, the design is printed onto a carrier material and transferred to the bag with a transfer press under heat and pressure. The process allows highly detailed logos, lettering and colour-intensive designs on a smooth, fixed surface – ideal for smaller series and personalised applications.

Materials: Cotton, polyester, non-woven, RPET

DTG printing (direct to garment)

Digital direct printing on cotton – a soft hand feel with a high level of detail.

Details

In DTG printing, the design is printed digitally straight onto the textile and bonds with the fibre. The result: a soft, fabric-like hand feel with a high level of detail and colour accuracy – particularly suited to cotton and small runs with photorealistic or personalised designs.

Materials: Cotton

Sublimation printing

The ink permanently bonds with the polyester fibre – photorealistic from seam to seam.

Details

In sublimation printing, the ink turns into a gas under heat and bonds permanently with the polyester fibre. This creates vivid, photorealistic all-over designs without a surface print layer – with a soft hand feel and high scratch resistance.

Materials: Polyester, rPET polyester

Embroidery

Embroidered logos with an elegant, three-dimensional look – exceptionally durable and washable.

Details

With embroidery, the design is stitched directly into the material with thread. The result is an elegant, three-dimensional finish that keeps its shape and withstands washing – ideal for high-quality cotton, jute and felt bags as well as upscale corporate gifts.

Flexographic printing

Flexible printing plates and fast-drying inks – cost-effective for medium to large runs.

Details

Flexographic printing uses flexible printing plates and fast-drying inks. It is ideal for simple logos, text, line art and bold designs, and cost-effective for medium to large quantities – although it does not offer photo quality.

Embossing & hot foil

Blind embossing or hot foil stamping in gold, silver or colour – for an elegant, tactile finish.

Details

Embossing and hot foil showcase logos in a tactile, glossy way – as blind embossing, or in gold, silver or coloured foil. Particularly striking on paper carrier bags and felt.

Materials: Paper, felt

How is a laminated PP woven bag printed?

For high-quality large runs, it isn’t the fabric that’s printed directly but an ultra-thin OPP film (oriented polypropylene) – in mirror image. Only then is the film applied to the fabric in the lamination process. The design sits protected beneath the film: brilliant, scuff-resistant and durable.

  1. 1Reverse-print the OPP film (gravure printing)
  2. 2Laminate the film onto the PP woven or RPET fabric
  3. 3Cut, sew, done – the design sits protected on the inside

How to supply your artwork

Questions about bag printing

hello@shopybag.com

Which printing methods does ShopyBag offer?

Screen printing, gravure printing (on laminated bags), flexographic printing, full-surface digital/photo printing, DTF, DTG, heat transfer and sublimation printing, as well as embroidery and embossing. The right method depends on the material, design and quantity – we will advise you personally.

Can my logo be printed in multiple colours or photorealistically?

Yes. For photorealistic designs, gravure printing on laminated bags, digital/photo printing, DTF and sublimation are ideal. For crisp logos in large quantities, screen printing with its high opacity is the cost-effective choice.

What format should I supply my logo in?

Ideally as a vector file (SVG, AI, EPS or PDF). Please supply photographic designs in high resolution. We check your artwork and will get in touch if we have any questions.

Can you make embroidered tote bags?

Yes. Embroidery is particularly well suited to cotton, jute and felt bags as well as heavyweight polyester qualities. Your logo is stitched into the material with thread – refined, three-dimensional and extremely durable.

Which printing method is the most cost-effective?

That depends on the run size and the artwork. For simple logos in large quantities, screen and flexo printing are particularly economical; for multicolour designs in small runs, DTF or transfer printing. Photorealistic gravure printing pays off from approx. 1,000–3,000 units.
