What are printed jute bags and jute tote bags?

Jute bags and jute tote bags are carrier bags made from the bast fibre of the jute plant – a renewable, biodegradable natural fibre – printed with a company logo as a promotional item. Jute tote bags typically have a fabric weight of 300–400 g/m² (EU standard approx. 320 g/m²), simple jute bags from 200–280 g/m², a coarse plain weave and a wipe-clean PE/PP inner lamination; robust shopping bags carry 10–15 kg. Thanks to their durability, jute bags are reused for years, visibly carrying a sustainability promise as they go.

Jute – the hard-wearing natural fibre for visible sustainability

Jute is obtained from the bast fibre of the jute plant. The fibre is renewable, biodegradable and recyclable – and surprisingly strong: a laminated jute shopper reliably carries around 10 kg, robust shopping bags 10 to 15 kg. All the while, the bag retains its unmistakable, high-quality natural look.

The hallmark of every jute bag and jute tote bag is its coarse plain weave: an open lattice of strong natural yarns in a warm sandy beige that gives the bag its rustic character. A lamination on the inside makes the shopper wipe-clean, structured and moisture-resistant – with a bio-based coating on request.

We print your jute bags and jute tote bags to suit the design: screen printing for solid logos, transfer or digital printing for finer artwork. For the handles, you can choose between stitched cotton handles, twisted cords and cork or leather handles as a premium option.

How we print and finish your jute bags

  • Screen printing carousel with printed cotton bags in the ShopyBag production facility

    Screen printing

The standard technique for retail and campaigns: high opacity on the coarse, natural brown fabric, strong colours (up to four colours) and an economical unit price for larger runs.

  • Employee placing printed cotton bags on a carousel transfer press

    Heat transfer printing

For finer details and multi-colour designs, such as campaign visuals: transfer printing applies them cleanly to the fibre – where screen printing reaches its limits.

  • Transfer film being peeled from a printed wildflower design on a cotton bag

    DTF printing (direct to film)

On a laminated or cotton-lined surface, DTF enables detailed, photorealistic multi-colour designs with a smooth finish – ideal for gift and gourmet sets.

  • Embroidery machine stitching a green logo onto a cotton bag

    Embroidery

For premium gifts and upmarket occasions: the strong texture carries an embroidered logo particularly elegantly and underlines the material’s artisanal, natural character.

Which applications and industries are jute bags best suited to?

Jute bags are particularly well suited to natural food, organic and delicatessen retail at the point of sale, to wine merchants and delicatessens as a sturdy bottle bag, to sustainable brand campaigns, and to trade fair bags and gift sets. Jute plays to its strengths wherever the bag itself should convey a visible commitment to natural materials.

Is a jute bag suitable as a carrier bag in retail?

Yes, very much so. The dense, coarse weave reliably carries heavy shopping such as wine bottles, tins or books – robust shopping bags carry 10 to 15 kg. With a reinforced base and sturdy handles, the bag is designed for years of use and is kept by the customer rather than thrown away.

How many brand impressions does a jute bag generate?

The exact number depends on how the bag is used, but the principle is clear: because a jute bag is robust and durable, it is reused for years. Every outing in public is a new brand impression, so your cost per impression falls with every use – the decisive advantage over single-use solutions.

Which version suits gift sets, and which suits jute bags with a logo as a trade fair giveaway?

For premium gift and gourmet sets, we recommend jute with a laminated or lined print area and embroidery or DTF printing – so the bag becomes part of the gift’s value. For trade fair giveaways in larger runs, jute with a screen-printed logo that makes economical use of the natural look is usually sufficient. We advise you according to occasion and run size.

Can jute bags be printed with detailed, multi-colour designs?

Directly on the coarse fabric, opaque techniques such as screen printing work best – ideal for clear logos. For detailed, multi-colour or photorealistic designs, we laminate the print area or use a cotton lining. Fine DTF printing is also possible on these surfaces.

Why jute rather than cotton, felt or paper?

Choose jute when robustness, years of reuse and a tangible eco-statement matter – for example at the retail point of sale or for sustainable campaigns. Cotton offers the finer, softer surface for fashionable promotional bags, felt the structured premium presentation and paper the lightweight single-use look. Jute is the choice when the material itself should carry the sustainability message.

Guide: Jute bags – what your brand should know

Where jute bags create the most brand value

In natural food, organic and delicatessen retail, the jute bag makes its impact before the logo is even read: the coarse, natural brown weave instantly signals naturalness and quality on the shelf and at the till. That makes it the ideal carrier at the point of sale, where you place your brand in the customer’s hands with every purchase.

The real value lies in reuse: a jute bag is carried for years – for shopping, to the office, to the beach. Every outing is a new brand impression in public and further lowers your cost per impression. A one-off budget thus becomes recurring visibility.

Use cases: from the till to the trade fair bag

As a carrier bag at the till, the dense weave reliably carries even heavy shopping – wine bottles, tins, books. With a reinforced base and handles made from cotton cord, jute or leather, the bag is designed for years of everyday use and works well as a sturdy bottle bag in wine and delicatessen retail.

At trade fairs and events, the natural brown texture stands out clearly from the usual plastic look – your trade fair bag is taken home rather than thrown away. In gift and gourmet sets, the bag becomes part of the packaging and then stays in use as a brand carrier. For detailed designs, we laminate the print area or fit the bag with a cotton lining, which also protects delicate contents.

What your sustainable brand gains

If your brand presence is meant to express an environmental commitment, the jute bag is credible proof: the fibre comes from a fast-growing renewable raw material and is biodegradable. The material delivers on the promise in a way people can see and feel – you don’t have to claim it first.

For brand managers, that means less explaining, greater acceptance among environmentally conscious audiences and a promotional item that matches your values. The durable quality keeps your message visible for years.

Jute or another material?

Jute is the choice when robustness, years of reuse and a tangible eco-commitment matter. For large-format, photorealistic designs or a soft, lightweight feel – such as fashionable promotional bags or large runs with fine multi-colour printing – cotton is better suited. For a structured premium presentation with a matt look, felt is the alternative; for a light, elegant single-use presentation, paper.
